Planetary Relationships
For the purposes of interpreting a chart, certain planets are friendly, neutral or enemies
Vedic astrologers group planets as friends, neutrals, and enemies to each other. When a planet is in the sign of a friend, it is strong (but not as strong as when in its own sign or exaltation). When a planet is in the sign of an enemy, it is weak (but not as weak as in debilitation). When a planet is in the sign of a neutral planet, its strength is mediocre (i.e. average).
The Moon has no enemies and
Jupiter, while it has enemies, is not the enemy of any planet.
The rulers of the trine positions from the Moolatrikona sign, and the rulers of the signs prior to those trine positions, are all friendly to the Graha whose Moolatrikona is counted from. Also, the ruler of the sign following the Moolatrikona sign, its “child”, is friendly. Note that all these Rulerships are entirely static; they have nothing to do with the actual position of the Graha.
In summary, the Grahas ruling the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 12th signs from the Moolatrikona sign are friends.
In addition to those, whichever Graha rules the exaltation sign becomes a friend as well. All the other Grahas become enemies.
When the same Graha rules a position that makes it a friend, and another position that makes it an enemy, it will become neutral.
There is a second consideration regarding planetary friendship, and that is their mutual distance in the chart. When two planets are in different signs, but not more than 2 signs apart, they become temporary friends. In other words, any planet placed in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th position from another, becomes its friend.
Compound relations
When the natural relation and the temporary relation are combined, the compound relation is obtained. When 2 planets are friends in both types of relation, they become Great Friends. If they are enemies in both considerations, they become Great Enemies.
If one consideration indicates friendship, but the other indicates enmity, the result is neutral.
If the natural relationship is neutral, the temporal relationship itself will indicate the relationship.
It is important to note that the signs of exaltation, ownership, and debilitation supersede the considerations in the table. E.g. even though the Moon is a friend of Mars, Mars is debilitated in Cancer. Similarly, even though Jupiter is a neutral planet for Venus, Venus is exalted in Pisces
