Planetary Benefics and Malefics
Planets are classified as benefic and malefic in terms of what most people identify as desirable and undesirable qualities and influences. Jupiter and Venus are natural benefics. Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are natural malefics, Sun is Cruel
Moon is a natural benefic when waxing (moving from new to full) otherwise when waning it is a natural malefic
Mercury is a natural benefic on its own or with a benefic (when it is not associated with a natural malefic), otherwise when associated with a malefic, it is a natural malefic.
The benefics in Vedic astrology are Venus, Jupiter, and the Moon, plus Mercury when it is either not influenced by a malefic, or is influenced by a benefic. However, in the creation of Yogas, Mercury is always treated as a benefic. Jupiter and Venus are natural benefics
The unique position of the Planets in a person’s chart: ruling the Ascendant, Kendras etc. modifies the influences of each Planet and they become Functional Benefics, Neutral and Malefics.
Functional and temporal benefics & malefics
The unique position of the Planets in a person’s chart: ruling the Ascendant and Kendras modifies the influences of each Planet and they become Functional Benefics, Neutral and Malefics.
Depending upon the Lord of the Ascendant there are:
Functional Benefics ; the 1st, 5th and 9th Lords
Functional Malefics are the 2nd, 6th 8th and 12th Lords
Temporal Benefics and Malefics:
If a planet only rules good houses (especially Kendras and Trikonas), it brings positive experiences into the person’s life.
When a planet only rules bad houses it becomes a temporal malefic, bringing challenges into the person’s life. (Note: for assessing a planet’s temporal nature, the 2nd and 11th houses are considered mildly good, and 3rd house as mildly bad. So Jupiter ruling the 8th and 11th would still be considered a temporal malefic, and Mars ruling the 3rd and 10th a temporal benefic.)
