Astrological (Graha)
Astrological Yogas are a specific configuration of one or more planets in specific signs, houses, or relationship with other planets
These are attributes you bring through from a former life – Skills mastered or damage done
In Jyotish, combinations of two or more astrological factors are called Yogas and create conditions that either raise or lower a person’s trajectory in life beyond the ordinary.
A yoga can be as simple as a planet stronger by its sign placement in one or more specific houses. Or it can be as complex as a series of several different criteria that must all be met.
Thousands of Yogas are defined in classical Vedic texts, and the majority of these Yogas use sign Rulerships in their specifications.
Classical textbooks on Jyotish from the very start work with complicated combinations called graha yogas. This approach cultivates the necessary and constructive habit of taking many influences into consideration when coming to an astrological conclusion and engenders humility and circumspection.
Proper Interpretation requires experience, humility, and the divine inspiration of a pure heart that is earned by earnest devotion. Pay attention to the revelations, that inner voice, that may surprise the Jyotishi, but proves correct,
The temptation is to adopt simple interpretations, to take Jupiter as a benefic, and to wax eloquent concerning its wonderful effect over everything Jupiter influences in the horoscope. While in certain horoscopes this may well be true, such a blanket interpretation ignores the possibility that the chart under consideration, may have detriment influences that disadvantage Jupiter which may be debilitated, rule bad houses, occupy detrimental house, aspected by Mars and Saturn, and is associated with Rahu that will often create results quite the opposite of wonderful.
Remember the axiom of Astrology that is expression need not be either/or: that both can happen in a life during different Dashas, Though such undesirable effects may build character, most people would nevertheless prefer advise to avoid them.
Saturn as a Malefic positioned in Aries will clearly adversely influence the various matters of Aries. Since Aries rules the head, you may have some physical problem pertaining to the head; since Aries rules activity, you may be disinclined to activity. Saturn being debilitated in Aries as the natural significator of subordinates, the person may also experience great difficulty with employees; and Saturn being the natural indicator of nerves, a debilitated Saturn may create symptoms like nervousness and irritability.
Now consider how the qualities of Saturn may blend into the qualities of Aries. Varahamihira dubs the person with Saturn in Aries ‘a fool’ on account of the natural malefic Saturn occupying the constellation which represents the brain; ‘deceitful’, because a fallen Saturn displays its worst qualities; ‘always on his legs’, because Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, the constellations which indicate the legs, so that a weak Saturn will be detrimental to the legs; and ‘without friends’, because Saturn rules the eleventh house and as such cannot give good friends when he is debilitated.
Similar rules of interpretation apply for planets in combination with one another. When Mercury is associated with or aspected by Mars, all matters ruled by Mercury will be weakened, because Mars is a malefic; because Mercury rules speech, such a person may speak badly, or tell lies. On the other hand, the concerns, which Mars represents, will be blended in with Mercurial matters. Since Mars rules aggression and fighting, and Mercury rules great dexterity and nimbleness, several works on Jyotish suggest that a Mercury-Mars association indicates a potential boxer. Mars and Mercury combined in the second house are likely to affect the individual’s speaking ability, which both the second house and Mercury rule. Some traditional astrological works suggest that such a combination will indicate a logician who is skilled in debate. Since the second house relates more to speaking than to athletics, this seems a more logical indication than boxing. But suppose this association of Mars and Mercury takes place in the second house in the constellation of Cancer, where Mars is debilitated and Mercury is in the constellation of its enemy. Such a native is less likely to be a great logician and debater than an impulsive and illogical speaker whose hasty words cause antagonism or can be both at different times.
Contrast this with the same combination in the second house this time in Capricorn, where Mars is exalted and Mercury is in a Rashi of a friend, a situation which is more likely to create skill in debate, all other factors being equal. Similarly, Jupiter (who rules oratory) in the second house in the first half of Sagittarius (a constellation of voice) will indicate through confluence a far better speaker than would Saturn (a mute planet) in the second house in Pisces (a mute constellation).
The general rules underlying graha yogas apply equally in houses, to planets in constellations, and to planets that combine with each other.
Only a combination of experience and intuition can establish whether a Mercury-Mars combination will make the owner horoscope a poor speaker, a great debater, a liar and cheat, an expert, or all of them wrapped into one. The key to deciding the interpretation to follow lies in evaluating all factors of the combination simultaneously: the house and constellation in which the combination lays, the natures and rulerships of the grahas that compose it, the effect of other grahas on the combination, and the native’s environment and cultural context.
While this style of interpretation is relatively straightforward in theory, it becomes very involved in practice. Mistakes occur because it is not always humanly possible to consider every pertinent influence in the chart.
The seers who gave us Jyotish tried to simplify things for us by emphasizing Graha Yogas. While thus far we have used the term ‘graha yoga’ to refer generically to combination of two or more grahas in a house, from now on we will use it to refer to outstanding planetary combinations indicate specific results. A few of the many classes of such Raja Yogas (which indicate leadership, power and fame); Dhana Yogas (which suggest wealth) and Daridra Yogas (which promises poverty); Praprajya Yogas (which lead to renunciation of the world and Balarishta Yogas (which indicate death in childhood).
Many of these yogas are well known to most Jyotishis, who look for them on first glancing at a horoscope. Some jyotishi focus exclusively on these yogas, and on the indications given them in the traditional texts, for the more auspicious yogas in a horoscope, the more likely it will be for the person to be someone of note who will rise through life to be powerful and prosperous. Sometimes, though, in spite of a multitude of promising yogas, you may never rise to the expected level of success. The most important reason for this failure is that the Dashas (see planetary periods) of the grahas involved do not occur at the appropriate periods of life. Another reason is that the grahas involved in the yogas may be weak (because of combustion, placement in unfriendly rashis or inauspicious avasthas, or weakness in subcharts). Yet another reason is that under better past Karma, in certain circumstances, a horoscope’s benevolent yogas can be canceled or broken (in Sanskrit bhanga) or debilitation cancelled and made a Raja Yoga by Neecha Banga Yoga
Alternate Lagnas: Except when noted, graha yogas are calculated from the Ascendant. Jyotishis often seek confirmation of a combination shown from the ascendant by reading the horoscope from the constellation occupied by the Moon, using the latter as if it were the ascendant, since after the ascendant the Moon is the fastest-moving factor in a horoscope. This sort of ‘tying down’ of the chart is the Chandra Lagna (Moon Lagna), which is frequently used when the birth time is very imprecise. When known, however, the ascendant is always pre-eminent. Many graha yogas can be counted either from the Moon (Chandra Yogas) or from the ascendant (Lagna Yogas) and, on occasion, also from the Sun lagna (Surya Lagna).
Every student of jyotish should practice locating the several graha yogas below in many horoscopes in order to be able to recognize them readily, and to get a head start on understanding jyotish’s many other yogas.
Calibrate the Chart; As you scrutinize the horoscopes in your possession, find out to what degree the yogas therein correlate with the life experiences of the owners of the charts.
Where the correlation is weak, try to find out what has weakened the planets which comprise the yoga.
All evils will be destroyed if a benefic aspects the Ascendant when born in the bright half. Similarly, all evils will be destroyed if a malefic aspects the Ascendant when born in the dark half
THE PANCHA MAHAPURUSHA YOGAS
We will now consider a few of the more prominent of the many thousands of graha yogas, attempting to dissect their inherent operational tenets. The first of these yoga combinations are the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas, the ‘five combinations of a great being’, which exist when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus in a horoscope occupies its own or exaltation constellation an angular or trinal house. The yogas formed by each called Ruchaka (Mars: ‘luster, splendor, desire, taste’), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter ‘goose’ or ‘swan’), Malatya (Venus, ‘a resident of the India known as Malava’) and Shasta (Saturn, ‘hare’) Yogas respective Here is a summary of the effects of the five Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas (extracted froThe person born in Bhadra Yoga (Mercury) will be gifted with long life intellect (buddbi), will be clean, will be praised by the learned, will be very rich, and will be clever in addressing an assembly.m Phaladipika 6:2-4):

Example: Saturn Sasha MahaPurusha Yoga: Horoscope of Margret Thatcher

This Vedic astrology horoscope belongs to Margret Thatcher who is also known as Iron Lady of England. Margret Thatcher is former Prime Minister of England and served from 1979 to 1990. In her Vedic astrology horoscope, Yoga Karaka Saturn is placed in ascendant along with Mercury, which also happens to be a very positive planet for a Libra Ascendant.
There are no malefic influences over Saturn and Mercury; and, therefore, all positive results of Shasha Yoga are conferred upon Margret Thatcher by the Saturn. See also Linda Singh, Caitland, Story, Connie

Jupiter in Obama’s D1 chart is debilitated sitting in 1H itself
Obama has Nicha-Bhanga Raja Yoga from past good Karma
The debilitated planet is associated with or aspected by its debilitation lord.
This Yoga indicates cancellation of the state of debilitation of a planet and yielding benefic results instead, being elevated to a Raja Yoga status.
But here a few points of importance on how to judge the true strengths of a planet:
- Always check the D9 – In D9 we can see Jupiter being in Uttara Ashadha Pada 4 is sitting in Pisces sign in D9, Pisces is Jupiter’s own sign, so this will become a Neech Bhanga of Jupiter for Obama, but STILL it is NOT RAJA YOGA
- We see further in D1, Jupiter sits with Saturn in Capricorn, Capricorn is a sign ruled by Saturn himself, and one of the rules of Neech Bhanga says – If a debilitated planet sits with a planet that is the owner of that sign, or is getting exalted in that sign, then it will be a cancellation of debilitation / neech bhanga
So, if instead of Saturn, Mars was seated here with Jupiter in Capricorn, then also there was a Neech Bhanga or Cancellation of Jupiter’s debilitation
But it is still not a Raja Yoga
- Final condition to check if Raja Yoga is forming through a debilitation, Jupiter in Obama’s chart sits in 1H and the planet cancelling that debilitation (Saturn) also is sitting in 1H itself
The rule for RAJA YOGA says – If the planet that cancels the debilitation, is sitting in a Kendra House (1,4,7,10) it will now become a RAJA YOGA
So the condition of Neech Bhanga + Raja Yoga gets fulfilled in Barack Obama’s chart through Jupiter’s debilitation.
What this means? That Jupiter Mahadasha will bring HUGE gains for him, and the aspect of Sun from 7H is also not to be forgotten as that also gives Jupiter and 1H itself a boost.

Barak Obama Shad Bala debilitated Jupiter becomes Raja Yoga

These Maha Purusha and other yogas occur fairly frequently, but every has them does not enjoy their effects in full, and some do not enjoy their effects at all, except perhaps in their dreams. It all depends on the strength and position of the yogas. The less such a yoga is interfered with by the impact of other grahas, particularly malefics, the more the native will experience its energies. A Ruchaka Yoga, for example, is one thing when Mars is aspected by its friend Jupiter alone, and quite another when it is aspected by its enemy Saturn, and is conjoined with Rahu.
Note that the indications for these yogas are mainly the significations for the grahas involved, because a Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga allows a graha to express its inherent nature freely and strongly. The description of Ruchaka Yoga is clearly a glorified listing of the astrological attributes of Mars. Mantreshwara might as well have gone on to say that someone with Ruchaka Yoga will be fond of confrontations, will be a ‘victory-at-any-cost’ competitor, may be accident-prone, will serve in executive and independent positions, may be a crusader for various causes, may have powerful younger siblings, may be athletic, may be a lawyer, and so on.
Many people with strong Ruchaka Yogas do end up becoming lawyers, but this potential will be actualized only in those horoscopes in which the fourth house of education (because law requires formal education) and Jupiter (because law requires good judgement) are both strong. Similarly, a person with an unblemished Ruchaka Yoga may become an athlete if the first house is very strong, because athletes require strong bodies.
One way to gauge the magnitude of a Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga is to see whether or not it recurs from all three lagnas (the ascendant, the Chandra Lagna and the Surya Lagna), which is a sort of confluence. That yoga which does so is very strong, all other factors remaining equal. A yoga which recurs from two lagnas is better than average, while a yoga which can be counted only from the ascendant is only average.
The classical texts mention other qualifications for a Maha Purusha Yoga that cannot be derived as easily . For example, Bribat Parasbara Hora says that our example of a Hamsa Yoga will be fond of playing games and of watery places. Tapash does indeed live on a property with a pond and very much enjoys water sports. The same text also states such an individual will have full cheeks and a round forehead and a golden luster: characteristics which Tapas does possess.
Simply because a graha occupies its own or its exaltation does not create a Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga. Venus which occupies Libra in Chart 2, is conjoined with the benefic Mercury. This is an auspicious placement, but it is no Malavya Yoga because it sits in the second house, which is neither a Kendra nor a kona. Likewise, in Chart 1 (see P. 415) Jupiter is exalted but in the second house, so that no Hamsa Yoga is formed. Anyway, this Jupiter is combusted and is conjoined with Rahu, which spoils many of its indications. Mars does occupy Aries, its own constellation but being in the eleventh house it does not form Ruchaka Yoga. It is, however, likely to give good results, since Mars is aspected only by the benefic waxing Moon.
An exalted planet which occupies a kendra or kona will create a Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga only if its dispositor is strong. When a graha occupies its own house, it serves as its own dispositor and is by definition strong in both body and soul. An exalted graha whose dispositor is afflicted by malefics, is combust or debilitated is unlikely to be able to deliver the promised goods for, though its body (deha) is powerful, its soul (jiva) is feeble.

THE DHARMA KARMA ADHIPATI YOGAS
Another class of astrological yogas for which Jyotishis always look for are the Dharma Karma Adhipati Yogas, the ‘Combinations of the Fortune and Action’. This yoga is formed when the dharma house (a kona) and a karma house (a kendra) combine in a horoscope, either by aspect or by association. ‘Karma’ means action, and ‘dharma’ indicates fortune, in the sense that those people who (dedicatedly follow their own individual dharmas find that luck begins to follow them around. Real success in life appears whenever there is a felicitous conjunction of effort with luck. Enterprise alone is no guarantee of achievement, nor can chance alone be relied upon; but when both combine, the whole truly becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Whenever Napoleon was considering elevating one of his generals to the rank of marshal, his final question, after hearing a litany of the man’s achievements and qualifications, would reportedly be: ‘Yes, but is he lucky?’
The source of good fortune is the Law of Karma: The total of your past karmas determines what sort of assistance the world will give you. The Kendras represent, in a certain sense, your present actions, your Kriyamana and Agama Karmas, while the Konas indicate the overall positivity or negativity of your past actions, your Prarabdha and Sanchita Karmas. Parashara explains (Bribat Parasbara Hora 41:28) that the Kendras are bhavas of Vishnu, the Surmounter of Difficulties, while the Konas are bhavas of Lakshmi, His wife, the Goddess of Prosperity. The Lagna is particularly important because it is simultaneously a Kona and a Kendra. Whenever the lord of a Kendra (the husband) and the lord of a Kona (his wife) unite, opportunity combines with real fortune to create enduring prosperity: a Raja Yoga
Dharma Karma Adhipati Yogas are examples of Raja Yogas, combinations which promise success, wealth, influence and celebrity. A strong Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga enables you to rise to a position of great prominence in society. Although, technically speaking, a Raja Yoga is a combination for political success (a raja is a ruler), over the years it has come to promise success, wealth, influence and/or celebrity. While in the old days the king had the power to support and influence all others, today non-political people like writers, actors, musicians and media moguls are often more influential, wealthy and famous than most of our rulers.
Whenever the lord of a kendra (the husband) and the lord of a kona (his wife) unite, opportunity combines with real fortune to create enduring prosperity: a Raja Yoga.
Here is another way to look at this combination: The kendra houses are sometimes called houses of environment (your objective surroundings) and the trinal houses, houses of merit (your subjective attitudes). When the objective and subjective factors in a horoscope combine harmoniously, they create by their confluence a powerful current, for then conscious (subjective) attitudes become aligned with the unconscious (objective) influences.

Tapash
If subjectively you happen to be academically gifted and inclined to study, and objectively you happen to live a stone’s throw from Harvard Yard, then voila! environment and merit have combined, and success becomes almost inevitable.
A Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga which involves either the lords of the ninth and tenth houses or the lords of the fourth and fifth houses is particularly valuable. The combination of the ninth and tenth lords is the strongest Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga, ninth is the strongest of the konas and the tenth the strongest kendras. Although a Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga is defined as a combination by association or mutual aspect between a kona and a kendra lord, it is also said to be formed when: (a) the ninth house occupies the ninth house and the tenth lord occupies the tenth house, or when the fourth lord occupies the fourth and when the fifth lord tenants the fifth. (In these cases, two Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas are often formed.) (b) the lord of the ninth occupies the tenth and the tenth lord dwells in the ninth, or the fourth lord appears in the fifth and the fifth lord resides in the fourth. (This is a type of Parivartana Yoga.)
In certain lagnas a single graha owns both a kendra and a kona. Such a planet becomes a Raja Yoga Karaka (‘Raja Yoga Signifies a single-graha Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga which, if well in the horoscope, will produce very desirable results. Listed are the planets which can act as Raja Yoga Karakas, and the lagnas for which they so act. Note that each of the Raja Yoga Karakas is a friend to the lord of the lagna in which they own the kendra and kona
Although Raja Yoga Karakas when well placed can singly create Raja Yoga, they should ideally be supported by benefics or by the rulers of beneficial houses. This is particularly true for Cancer lagna, because Mars, the Raja Yoga Karaka, is debilitated in the first house. It is sometimes said that Mars forms Raja Yoga for a Cancer ascendant only when it is supported by benefics.
Saturn acts as Raja Yoga Karaka for the ascendants of Venus, and Venus returns the favor for Saturn. Symmetry suggests that the Moon and Sun, lords of Cancer and Leo respectively, should, when conjoined, form a Raja Yoga for the two ascendants of Mars (Aries, in which the luminaries’ own houses 4 and 5, and Scorpio, in which they rule 9 and 10). Because whenever the Sun and Moon occupy the same house the Moon’s inherent light is exceedingly dim, the Raja Yoga formed when the Sun and Moon aspect one another (as they do when the Moon is full or near full) is much stronger than is the yoga formed when they conjoin, at the time of the new Moon.
Like any other beneficial yoga, a Raja Yoga gives good results when it appears in a good house and is without affliction. Consider a Saturn at 29 degrees in the first house of a Libra ascendant in the horoscope of a person about to enter a period where Saturn will be very influential in her life. For Saturn as the Raja Yoga Karaka to be exalted in Libra is very desirable, for it also creates a Shasha Yoga in the first house, and Saturn is a friend of Venus, the lord of the lagna. But – because Saturn occupies its Mrita Avastha there may be danger to health (since Saturn prompts ill health and the first house prompts the body), danger of bankruptcy (because Saturn is the natural house significator of the three evil trik houses; this is one reason why Saturn is the significator of misery) and danger to profession (because Saturn aspects the tenth house as a significator of the tenth house).

Maggie’s Barry was a successful, gifted but troubled artist
Barry’s Mars rules the 10th house Kendra and 5th house Kona , and is placed in the 10th house. Mars is a Yoga Karaka planet, which is very favorable for the 10th house of career.
Experience will also teach you that these and other Yogas occur in horoscopes with some frequency but with very different strengths. Be mindful of Mantreshwara’s axiom that the results of good Yogas become certain when the Grahas involved are strong and there is a confluence of good influences to the participant planet. Contrast now the condition of the combination of the lords of the fifth houses in Chart 2 with the same combination in Chart 1. In Chart 1, the two planets involved (Mercury and Venus) sit together in the third house, a dussthana; Venus is in the constellation of its enemy; and both Mercury and Venus are aspected by Saturn, who is also acting as eighth lord.
We must also examine a Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga from the Moon and Sun Lagnas. Recall the five Human bodies, the annamayakosha (physical body), pranamayakosha (etheric body), manomayakosha (subtle body), vijnanamayakosba (causal body) and anandamayakosha (greater causal body). The ascendant (Birth Lagna) represents the physical body, the Moon Lagna the subtle body (and manifestation), and the Sun Lagna the causal body (thought manifestation). Congruence of thoughts and actions, which leads to integrated activity, occurs when planetary combinations recur from all three lagnas; this is yet another form of confluence.
OTHER GRAHA YOGAS
A partial list of Yogas commonly cited in various Jyotish texts appears below. Specific meanings are provided for some. The reader should analyze the others with the help of the basic interpretive method. Always blend together the significations of the grahas, rashis and bhavas to arrive at an interpretation.. One general rule: The more yogas in which a graha participates, the greater its importance.
“Should one among Venus, Mercury or Jupiter be in an angle – all evils are destroyed as the Sun eliminates Darkness.”
In your chart if you have Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in a Kendra (angular house) and Kona (Trinal house). This is most difficult to obtain and would cast a transcendental blessing on your whole life, you will be long lived, wealthy, intelligent and like by the government
All evils are destroyed if a benefic aspects the Lagna of a person born in the night in the bright half of the day. Similarly, if a malefic aspects the Lagna of a person who is born in the day time in the dark half of the year.
Physical comforts will diminish as Lagna Lord be malefic is conjoined with a malefic or in 12th house
When malefics situated in the 4th and the 10th houses happen to be hemmed by benefics, and benefics fall in the Kendra or angles (4-7-10) or in Trikona or trines, the combination is auspicious for the person’s father.
If malefics are surrounded by benefics, while angles or trines are themselves occupied by a benefic, evils disappear soon. Not only this, evils will not follow from the bhavas concerned.
If Ascendant Lord is without strength challenges in character will be faced
Vanchana Chora Bhithi Yoga Malefic occupies the Lagna while Gulika is in a Trikona (Sarvartha Chintamani 2/76).. The person will be constantly suspicious of people around him, afraid of being taken advantage of, swindled or stolen from
Predict wealth if the Dhana Lord (2ns House) is in Dhana or an angular house or trine
If Dhana 2nd house Lord is without strength income will be less
If Karrna 10th house is devoid of strength, you will face obstructions in work
If there is an exchange of lordship between a Kendra and Kona or conjuction or full aspect then the physical and spiritual life is combined and gives an Astrological Yoga
It will prove auspicious for the mother if Guru (Jupiter) aspects or conjoins Mars (Mangal)
If malefics are surrounded by benefics in angles and trines, evils disappear soon
Lagna Lord is able to counteract evils if strong and places in an angular house
Lagna lord with a malefic: constitutional strength will diminish
Lagna Lord in an angle or trine comforts of the body will be enjoyed
If there is a Benefic in the Lagna forming Subha Yoga: you will have complete happiness through your children – When the Lord of the Lagna and Lord of 5th house are conjoined in an angular house you will have complete happiness through your children
Benefic in an angle or trine: all diseases disappear
Health will be obtained if a benefic aspects the Lagna
If Mercury, Jupiter or Venus are in the 4th 7th or 10th from the Lagna or are in the company of Moon in the Lagna – fame
If the Lord of Dhana (2nd house) is in Dhana or in an angle or a trine, it will promote wealth
If Lord of Dhana (Sun) joins Lord of 11th in an angle – predict wealth in the Dashas of these planets
A benefic in Dhana (2nd House) will promote wealth while a malefic will destroy it
Should Sahaj Bhava be conjunct or aspected with a benefic, you will have a sibling and be courageous
If Mangal or Sahaj lord is in an angle or trine or in exaltation predict Happiness
If Dharma’s 9th house Lord of Spirituality (Saturn) is Exalted there will be a spiritual life
Venus and Mercury conjoined predict astrologer
If Lagna Lord in Bandhu Bhava, you will have happiness from your mother and father and will have brothers
As Rahu is in an angle or trine you will perform religious ceremony
Mars is aspected by Jupiter: confers courage and blessing of a son
Should Putra’s (5th House) Lord be in its own house or in its own Navamsha or in exaltation you will have land, vehicles, houses and musical instruments
And if Putra’s (5th House) Lord is with the Lagna Lord Venus you will have happiness from your children
If Rahu is in an angle you will perform fire ceremonies
if Labha’s 11th house Lord of Gain is Exalted there will be many opportunities
Rahu in the 6th house gives stomach disorders
However, have you had trouble with your spleen? Should there be exchange of Lordships between the 6th and 12th Lord (Mercury and Jupiter) – predict trouble with your spleen
If Yuvati’s (7th House) Lord has strength and conjoined or aspected by a benefic. You will have wealth, be honorable, happy and fortunate
If Randhra’s (8th house) Lord is in an angle: long life is indicated
If Karmas Lord (10th house) is weak you will face obstructions in work
If Karma’s Lord (10th house) is with Bhandu’s Lord (4th house) you will have a beautiful mansion.
If Karma’s 10th house Lord is with a benefic and in an auspicious Bhava you will gain through Patronage and in business
If Labha (11th House) Lord is in an angle or a trine from the Lagna and has strength – there will be easy gains
If Saturn (Dhum) is in Dharma Bhava (9th House) you will be rich and honorable
Surya in Vyaya: 12th house: Long life span on the person born in Tula (Libra) Rashi
If Shukra (Venus) be in a Navamsha of Mars or a Rashi of Mars and receives an aspect fro or conjoined with Mars you may have lesbian relations
If Shukra is so related to Saturn (Shoni) (Saturn) you will have extremely intimate relations with a male.

Adhi Yoga: Benefics occupying simultaneously the sixth, the seventh and the eighth houses, counted from either the Moon or the ascendant. In Adhi Yoga benefics in the sixth and eighth houses flank the seventh house, which strengthens that house, and any planet therein. The aspect on the first house of such a strengthened benefic in the seventh house will then produce most favorable effects. This yoga is particularly good for raising one to a position of leadership (adhi means ‘to add, to receive’).
Akhanda Samrajya Yoga: One of the Lords of the 11th 9th or 2nd Houses are in a Kendra from the Moon, while Jupiter is the Lord 2nd, 5th, or 11th house: You will have a great kingdom

Planets in the tenth house from the Lagna, the zenith of the horoscope, shine brilliantly. Amala Yoga tends to make your actions pure (tenth house) stainless (virtuous and pious). You will be revered by society, which is one way in which a benefic in the house enhances tenth-house meanings

Ashubha Mala Yoga: When all the benefic grahas tenant houses six, eight and twelve This is very undesirable combination (A means ‘the necklace of inauspiciousness’) indicates great difficulties in life, just as the albatross around the neck of the Ancient betokened his ruination. If there are benefics in houses six and eight alone, the beneficial influence is reduced somewhat, but is not canceled. That situation is therefore also a sort of Adhi (benefics in the sixth, seventh and eighth houses) and example of Ashubha Mala Yoga. Ashubha Mala Yoga occurs only when all benefics lie in the sixth house alone, in the eighth alone, in the sixth and twelfth houses only, or in the eighth and twelfth houses only. In these cases, all the power of the benefics is completely eclipsed, robbing the native of all good influences.
Arshadosha Yoga: Lord of 8th house, a malefic, is in the 7th house without benefic aspect: vulnerable to hemorrhoids

Budhaditya Yoga: When the Sun and Mercury occupy the same constellation. This famous yoga, which is prevalent (because Mercury can never be more than one rashi away from the Sun), confuses many who try to interpret it. While a Budhaditya Yoga is said to illumine one’s intellect, every jyotishi finds it in the horoscopes of dullards and geniuses alike. Some people attempt to use this fact to undermine the theory of combustion, since a combust Mercury should (if combust planets are weak) give such natives uniformly weak intellects. But, an individual’s inner qualities such as intellect are not necessarily impaired when their significators are combust. When intelligence is impaired in someone who has a Budhaditya Yoga, it is often other influences.
However, for a Budhaditya Yoga to be really effective in a horoscope it must above all be somehow configured with either the ascendant (the chief indicator of the individual) or the fifth house (intellect), with the first house being preferred. When this is so, the following criteria must then be met: (a) If either the Sun or Mercury owns either the first or the fifth houses, the yoga must appear in a good house. (b) If neither graha owns either house, the yoga must occur in either the ascendant, the seventh house (from which its aspects the ascendant), the fifth house or the eleventh house (from which its aspects the fifth). (c) Under all circumstances the grahas should be strong and not otherwise afflicted, and the first and fifth houses must be strong.

In a male horoscope Chandra Mangala Yoga also connotes gains through women, or through such industries as hospitality (hotels, food, and the like) and the personal beautification industry (exercise, dieting, hairdressing, and so on). This yoga (mentioned in Phaladipika 6:70) should not be confused with the yoga of the same name included in the group of twenty-four Yogas below. The results, while similar, are more pervasive, rendering difficult the entire horoscope instead of only the tenth house. If Dur (difficult) Yoga is reversed (with the trik lords weak or combust and the lords of houses one, four, nine and ten strong in kendras or konas), the native will be wealthy, happy, virtuous and powerful.
Whole systems of interpretation have been built on the principle which lies at Dur Yoga’s root: the lords of dussthanas cause difficulties when they are strong and occupy non-dussthanas, while the lords of good houses cause good results when in kendras and konas. When the lord of a dussthana is weak, it is no long5r. capable of giving in plenty the evil results which it otherwise promises, any more than the lords of good houses can give their promised results when they are weak or combust and are posited in dussthanas.
Durudhara Yoga: When there is a planet other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu exists in both the second and twelfth houses from the Moon. Planets on either side of the Moon act as heralds for the luminaries, who are the regents of the skies. Any planet so near the Moon will be very obvious at night, enhancing thereby the Moon’s splendor.
Durudhara Yoga: Any planets, other than Sun, occupy the 2nd and the 12th house from Moon.
You earn fame through good speech, learning, valor and virtue. Immense wealth, vehicles, lands, servants, comforts, and freedom from enemies. The person is given to charities and is attracted to member of the opposite sex having lovely eyes
Durudhara Yoga (Mangal/Guru) Mars and Jupiter occupy the 2nd and the 12th house from Moon.
This variety of Durudhara Yoga shows that the person is renowned and wealthy, easily angered, generally contented, protector of his dear ones, harassed by his opponents, accumulator of fortune earned through his own efforts.
.The texts list many meanings for these yogas, but our Jyotish guru taught us always to examine the nature of the grahas involved and the ‘houses involved in them before even trying to predict their effects. Suppose that, for a Libra lagna, the Moon occupies the tenth house in Cancer and Mercury sits in the ninth house (the twelfth from the Moon) in Gemini. The Anapha Yoga thus created is substantially strengthened by the Bhadra Yoga which Mercury creates in the auspicious ninth house. We may safely assert that such a yoga will promote writing, publishing, higher studies or advanced research, for these are meanings common to both Mercury and the ninth house. If, for the same lagna, Moon tenants Aries in the seventh house and a debilitated Mercury forms Anapha Yoga in the sixth house in Pisces, the yoga will be hardly worth considering, although theoretically it is better for this enfeebled Anapha Yoga to exist than it is for Mercury simply to sit debilitated in the sixth house as lord of the ninth house of higher studies.
Budha-Guru Durudhara Yoga where Mercury and Jupiter are 2nd and12th from Moon: religious, eloquent, poet, renunciate, highly renowned.
Guru-Shukr Durudhara Yoga where Jupiter and Venus are 2nd and12th from Moon: wisdom and valour, steadfast and prosperous, guiltless
Ekaputra Yoga; The lord of the 5th house is in a Kendra or a Trikona (original source unknown). The person will have only one son or daughter.

Gaja Kesari Yoga: Should Jupiter be in a Kendra from the Moon, Gaja Kesari Yoga is formed. You will have a successful career and attain a dignified position: wealthy, intelligent and scholarly.

As Sun, the lord of the 12th house is in the 12th house, Gibbs will only face heavy expenditure, will-not have physical felicity, be irritable and spiteful.
As the Ascendant’s lord is in the 12th house and is devoid of benefic aspect and / or conjunct a cruel planet, Sun, the native will be bereft of physical happiness, will spend unfruitfully and be given to much anger
2 x Samadhi Yoga: The lord of the 9th Venus or the 10th house is in Devalokamsha or Parvartamsha aspected by benefics (Sarvartha Chintamani 7/2/42). The person will be established well in the realization of the Supreme.

The accident occurred during the Jupiter Dasha: For a Virgo Lagna, the functional nature of Jupiter is Malefic. However Jupiter’s essential character prevailed and he survived 2 years in hospital
Barry Gibbs had Gaja Kesari Yoga, considered a highly auspicious and beneficial combination in Vedic astrology, associated with fame, success, prosperity, and a life of abundance. It is believed to bestow individuals with intellectual prowess, good fortune, and a fulfilling life journey
The lesser combination of Moon and Jupiter in angles to each other is noted in Phaladipika and given the simpler name of Kesari Yoga, but even in this watered-down version of the yoga it is still important that Jupiter and the Moon to be in good houses from the ascendant. Since one full third of all horoscopes display Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, it is wise to ensure that the combination Parashara’s more stringent criteria before predicting the promised for the yoga. A Moon in the twelfth house and debilitated and combust Jupiter in the third house would clearly unlikely to.

Kuja Dosha, Mangal (Bom) Dosha or Mangalik is Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th 7th 8th & 12th that makes marriage before 30 years of age difficult.

Mangalik

Kuja Dosha is probably the best-known of Graha Yogas India’s general public, and many Indians still assiduously avoid marrying anyone with Kuja Dosha. While this yoga originally indicated the death of the spouse, it was later modified to mean marital misery. Mangala usually means ‘auspicious’; most women wear wedding necklaces called Mangala sutras instead of wedding rings. But Mangala is also a name for Mars, a violent, argumentative Graha who does not promote marital harmony when configured with one of the houses of relationship. While Mars can sometimes become auspicious for good luck as some Jyotishis believe that Mars is called Mangala in honor of the penances, sacrifices and other auspicious actions done to avert his evil effects).
Mars in the first house causes Kuja Dosha because of the stance of the first house as an epitome of the horoscope, and the first house, being the seventh house from the seventh is a derivative of the seventh house. Also, when Mars is in the ascendant, he aspects both the seventh house (the house of marriage) and the eighth house (the mangalaya sthana, or house of the duration of married life; the Mangala sutra is its symbol).

Trump:
Mars in the second house causes Kuja Dosha because the second house rules family life, and, being the eighth from the seventh represents the partner’s longevity, and because from the house Mars aspects both the fifth house of progeny and the eighth house of Chronic Illness.
Trump has been married three times and divorced twice, the only US president with that marital history. No president in the history of the United States had a more fraught association with women than Donald Trump? He flagrantly cheated on all three of his wives, was convicted of multiple accusations of sexual assault, publicly ogled his eldest daughter, bought the silence of a porn star, and proclaimed his now-infamous seduction technique: “grab ’em by the pussy.”
Frankie
Mars is the secondmost influencial element in this chart. Mars rules the 5th house and 12th house, and is placed in the 2nd house. Mars is a trine lord which is very favorable for the 2nd house. For a Sagittarius Lagna, and also from the Moon in Aries, the functional nature of Mars is Benefic. That makes Mars a very strong Benefic, which means that eventhough Mars is a natural malefic, and the chart is Mangalik

Frankie:
Mangal (Bom) Dasha or Mangalik or Kuja Dosha is Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th 7th 8th & 12th that makes marriage before 30 years of age difficult.
Do not get married before you are 30 or you will argue about money. The first marriages contracted by such people prior to age twenty-eight usually end unhappily, though they will not necessarily end prior to age twenty-eight.
Kuja Dosha
Mars in the fourth house causes Kuja Dosha because the fourth is the house of domestic happiness, and because from the fourth it aspects the seventh house.
Mars in the seventh house disrupts married life directly, and also indirectly by aspecting both the first & second houses.
Mars in the eighth house adversely affects the eighth house of Chronic Illness, Sex, Death and Inheritance and poisons Marriage by argument before the age of 10; and the second house of Family and Finances by aspect;
Mars in the twelfth house disturbs the positive indications of that bhava (like the pleasures of the bed) and also aspects the seventh house. Mars in the 12th house of might warn you about enemies and people in your family and relatives who might be trying to destroy the relationship with your spouse. However, spouses might also be argumentative but might challenge hidden enemies to protect the bond and marriage
.
There is an alarming tendency among inexperienced Jyotishis to become unnecessarily alarmed when they discover this combination in a horoscope. Since half of all horoscopes that are counted from the Lagna, half of those counted from the Moon, and half counted from Venus must possess this blemish, well over half the world’s population must suffer from it. If Kuja Dosha could not be mitigated, its dire results, including the early death of the life partner, would occur in a substantial majority of the population, which is not the case. Exceptions to Kuja Dosha are therefore very important and in fact are so numerous. Here are four of the most important ones:
(1) Generally speaking, anyone who has Kuja Dosha can safely marry anyone else who has a Kuja Dosha of approximately equal strength, because the two combinations will cancel each other out.
(2) One tradition says that even the strongest Kuja Dosha is over and done with once you reach the age of thirty, because Mars reaches maturity at age twenty-eight and that any marital mischance which occurs after age thirty to someone whose horoscope shows a strong Kuja Dosha is probably due to other factors. Marriages contracted by such people prior to age twenty-eight usually end unhappily, though they will not necessarily end prior to age twenty-eight.
(3) Mars in its own or exaltation Rashi greatly modifies any Kuja Dosha position and perhaps even cancels it (‘perhaps’, because the experts disagree on this point).
(4) The presence of the Moon in the house Mars occupies (which of course creates a Chandra Mangala Yoga) also cancels Kuja Dosha.

Nicha-Bhanga Raja Yoga: The exaltation Lord of the debilitated planet is in a Kendra from the Moon
Nicha-Bhanga Raja Yoga: The debilitated planet is associated or aspected by its debilitation Lord
Debility does not become equal to an exaltation or is a desirable placement, however. Debility is debility, a Bhanga is no more perfect than is a prosthesis applied to body. Giving a debilitated graha a cane with which to enable the graha to exert some beneficial effects but, excels at its duties, it will still never be normal. Moreover, Neecha Bhanga creates a Raja Yoga only when the debilitated graha occupies a kendra or a kona; otherwise, the planet’s debility will merely be removed. Four of the most important ways in which debilitity is canceled are: (1) if the lord of the rashi occupied by the graha is in a kendra position from the Moon or Lagna; (2) if the lord of the rashi where the debilitated graha is exalted is in a kendra position from the Moon or Lagna; (3) if the lord of the rashi occupied by the debilitated graha aspects that graha; or (4) if the planet who would be exalted in the rashi occupied by the debilitated graha is in a kendra from the Moon or from the Lagna.
As an example, take Saturn in Aries. If Mars (1- dispositor), Venus (2 – lord of Saturn’s exaltation rashi) or (4 – who is exalted in Aries) occupies a kendra from the Moon or from the Lagna, or if Mars aspects Aries (3), Saturn’s debility will be canceled. In most of the combinations that redeem a debilitated planet, its dispositor must be well placed in some way; the better the dispositor (jiva) is placed, the greater the relief to the debilitated planet (deha). The results produced by a debilitated planet will be the worst possible when its dispositor is itself debilitated, as would happen when, for example, Saturn occupies Aries and its dispositor Mars occupies Cancer.
In any Horoscope in Lagna Chart, Navangsha and Janma Chart: Lagna Lord aspects the 1st and 7th house: strong Raja Yoga
Own House: Any planet in own house: if are in Kendra and aspect each other: more powerful.
Parannabhojana Yoga: The Lord of 2nd House is Debilitated or in unfavorable Navamsha and aspects a debilitated planet. Depends on others for food may eat defective food – unfavorable. Offset by strong Sun
Parakrama Yoga: The 3rd Lord is in a benefic Navamsha conjunct or aspected by benefics and Mars is placed in a benefic sign: Great Courage
Parivartana Yoga: When two grahas mutually occupy each others rashis. Parivartana Yoga (Parivartana means ‘exchange’ or barter which is also known as ‘mutual reception’ or ‘exchange of houses’ exists when, for instance, Mars is in Gemini and Mercury in Aries an exchange between the lords of the kendra houses and of the kona houses is deemed to be very beneficial, as is the exchange between the lords of dussthanas (inauspicious) houses. The latter exchange typical delivers its good effects only after first producing some stress events; for example, some people become famous only after, and often because of, first being falsely accused and then extricating themselves from the calumny. Or, when you benefit from an inheritance, someone (probably a near and dear one) had to die in order to leave the bequest. The exchange between the lords of other houses usually produces mixed results, some good and not so bad.
Parivartana Yoga can also produce evil effects. Here is one case: When the lord of the first house occupies the sixth house and the sixth lord sits in the lagna, and the lord of the sixth is conjoined with or aspected by the lord of a maraka house, the result will be penury (Bribat Parashara Hora 42: 3).
Maha Parivartana Yoga: The 2nd Lord exchanges houses with the 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, or 11th houses: predict wealth and comfort, status, physical enjoyment, plus beneficial effects of the houses involved
Kala Parivartana Yoga: 3rd Lord exchanges houses with Lagna Lard or 2nd, 4th, 5th or 9th, 10th or 11th Lord: fickle and wicked nature, fluctuating fortunes and temperament
Parvata Yoga: Benefic planets occupy the Kendras and the 6th and 8th houses are vacant or occupied with benefics. Parvata Yoga makes a person wealthy, charitable, eloquent, learned in classical subjects, fond of mirth, famous, splendiferous, and a leader. Two of this yoga’s several definitions appear in Bribat Parashara Hora and in Phaladipika.
Parashara defines Parvata Yoga as benefics in kendra houses with seventh and eighth houses empty or occupied one by benefics. Because the seventh house is a maraka house, and the eighth house is the worst of the trik houses, any planets in those houses should be benefics in order to modify their results. Whenever a malefic occupies the seventh, it will damage the first house, while a malefic in the eighth house will create immense suffering and reduce the lifespan. A benefic in the eighth house will at least modify the negative effect of the eighth house, though much of the benefit promised by the benefic will be lost. To learn yogas thus, by analyzing their likely effects instead of merely committing them to memory, is to see how jyotish’s basic principles apply to real-life situations.
Phaladipika states that Parvata Yoga is formed when the dispositor the lord of the ascendant occupies its own rashi while simultaneously occupying a kendra or a kona house from the lagna. This writer assumes, but does not mention, that the lord of the lagna should also occupy a good position in the horoscope for this yoga to be formed. If the lord of the first house is in, say, the eighth house, there will be great benefit to it if its dispositor is in its own rashi in a kona from the lagna, but the benefit will be more along the lines of a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, i.e. a cancellation position.
Pamara Yoga: Lord of 5th house in 6th, 8th or 12th house: Indiscriminate and miserable, a liar, cheat, childless or suffering from the loss of a child.
Pushkala Yoga: When the Moon’s dispositor conjoins the lagna, in a kendra, in a rashi in which it is strong, while strong benefic aspects the lagna. Those with Pushka (abundant’) Yoga, which is a fine example of the? dispositor, are wealthy, honored by kings, famous, adorned. In this case the crucial f2ictor is the di Moon, since the Moon is second only to the lagna I the horoscope.
Putra Sukha Yoga: Jupiter, Venus or Mercury are in the 5th house: you will enjoy happiness from your children
Purnayu Yoga: Lagna Lord and 8th house Lord occupy Chara sign or one in Dvisvabava and other in Sthira Sign: long life up to 100 years
Purnayu Yoga: Lagna Lord and Mon occupy Chara sign or one in Dvisvabava and other in Sthira Sign: long life up to 100 years
Raiju Yoga: with the Lagna and many planets in the Chara signs: you will be ambitious and fond of travel and change in search of fame and fortune, with an open mind. In the 12th house in search of peace
RAJA YOGAS

THE TWENTY-FOUR RAJA YOGAS
The twenty-four yogas given below are extremely helpful for those Jyotishis who seek to fuse many factors when making astrological judgments. These yogas are specific to each of the twelve and their results affect predominantly the matters indicated in the relevant house. Twelve of these yogas are auspicious in developing the matters indicated by the relevant houses, and are inauspicious, obstructing those matters in one way or another.
The twelve auspicious yogas come about when:
- a house is occupied or aspected by benefics and

The meanings for the yogas involving houses six, eight and twelve are somewhat less benevolent than those of the better houses. Benefits for these three yogas are mixed with defects, since they involve inherently evil houses, according to Principle II. A person whose horoscope shows Astra Yoga, for example, subdues his foes but is rough and arrogant; the implications for the other two yogas are similar.
Those with Dur Yoga, for example (which differs from the more general Dur Yoga mentioned above), have their tenth-house matters obstructed. They may be ‘insignificant in the eyes of the public’, i.e. have no renown, a poor reputation, professional instability, or the like. Note that the yogas for the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses have positive indications; they can create benefits in much the same way that a Viparita Raja Yoga can.
Kuja Dosha: Only two common graha yogas lack any mention in any authoritative text: Kala Sarpa Yoga and Kuja Dosha (The Blemish of Mars’). Usually referred to as ‘being Mangalik,’ Kuja Dosha (as it is usually known in India) occurs whenever Mars occupies houses one, two, four, eight or twelve in a horoscope. It is unique among yogas as it is counted not just from the ascendant but also from the Moon and from Venus, and is regarded as being particularly virulent when it recurs in all three positions.
While Mars can sometimes become auspicious for good luck as some Jyotishis believe that Mars is called Mangala in honor of the penances, sacrifices and other auspicious actions to avert his evil effects).
Mars in the second house causes Kuja Dosha because the second house rules family life, and, being the eighth from the seventh represents the partner’s longevity, and because from the house Mars aspects both the fifth house of progeny and the eighth house.
Mars in the fourth house causes Kuja Dosha because the fourth is the house of domestic happiness, and because from the fourth its aspects the seventh house.
Mars in the seventh house disrupts married life directly, and also does so indirectly by aspecting both the first and second houses.
Mars in the eighth house adversely affects the eighth by occupation and the second by aspect;
and Mars in the twelfth house disturbs the positive indications of that bhava (like the pleasures of the bed) and also aspects the seventh house.
There is an alarming tendency among immature Jyotishis to become unnecessarily alarmed when they discover this combination in a horoscope.
(2) One tradition says that even the strongest Kuja Dosha is over and done with once the native reaches the age of thirty, because Mars reaches maturity at age twenty-eight and that any marital mischance which occurs after age thirty to someone whose horoscope shows a strong Kuja Dosha is probably due to other factors.
Kala Sarpa Yoga: (‘The Serpent of Time’) Yoga is an admirable illustration of the many graha yogas which are not as easy to locate or comprehend as are Kuja Dosha and most of the other yoga above. In Kala Sarpa Yoga, all the seven planets from the Sun through to Saturn are situated in between Rahu and Ketu Two Nodes are described as shadow planets because th literally shadows, the shadows which cause eclipses. Mythologically they are two portions of the same body; the body of a demon had tried to steal the nectar of immortality. When the Sun and Moon tattled on the rascal, Lord Vishnu beheaded the knave with his discus just as a drop of the nectar was dribbling down the fiend’s throat; this made both his halves immortal. Enraged with this treachery, the Two Nodes perpetually chase and seize the Luminaries, who perpetually wriggle out of their grasp after moments of adumbration
Kala Sarpa Yoga, which is not mentioned in any classical on jyotish, is probably Tantric in origin, given the Tantric fascination with shadows, with time (kala means both ‘black’ and here refers to Ketu) and serpents (sarpa, which here refers to Rahu), with the occult (which the nodes rule), and with demonic beings (which they are). Kala Sarpa Yoga is described in Dravidian (South Indian) treatises, but even here there is no consensus as effect. Some texts describe it as a major flaw in a birth chart, which portends loss of everything, while others say that it is happiness and the goodwill of kings – provided that the child possesses it survives.
There is not even consensus on its formation, which is not surprising, considering the confusion that is natural to the nodes. Some say that ‘Rahu bites with his head’, which means that must ‘bite’ (touch) all the grahas in his natural course (which happens to be backward from that of all the other planets). This condition occurs whenever Rahu leads all the other planets (so that they all move toward him). Others, who associate the nodal axis with the stinging scorpion, insist that ‘Ketu stings with his tail’, meaning that Ketu must lead all the other grahas. Yet another group considers Kala Sarpa Yoga to be formed in either way, an approach which seems to be verified by experience.
Two types of Kala Sarpa are thus distinguished: (i) Anuloma (‘normal direction’) type all planets moving toward Rahu; this type is less likely to give trouble than is the other; and (2) Viloma (‘reverse direction’) type – all planets moving toward Ketu, which can cause prosperity but will give troubles side by side.
The Yoga is still formed even if there are planets conjoined (in the same house) with either Rahu or Ketu or both, so long as these planets are within the nodal axis by degree position; but a ‘true’ Kala Sarpa is formed only when the planets are in contiguous constellations. All five intervening rashis need not be tenanted by planets, but all the planets must clump together. The situation is worse when the planets are evenly distributed because during their transits Rahu or Ketu will continuously pass over one planet after another, generating crises as they go. The texts neglect to say whether the ascendant must be included in the houses contained within the Serpent’s belly (i.e. the houses which are trapped between Rahu and Ketu), or whether there is a way to cancel its effects (in the way that debility can be canceled by Neecha Bhanga Yoga).
The difficulties created by a Kala Sarpa Yoga typically focus on:
- the houses ruled by any graha that either Rahu or Ketu conjoins, or
- the houses ruled by one or both of the dispositors of Rahu and Ketu, or
- the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy.
This is usually an either/or situation in that one of the above houses is ordinarily a very noteworthy indicator of the problems the Yoga causes. The side of the axis that is conjoined with or aspected by malefics will usually be worse than the other or, if one of the dispositors is a malefic, the houses that it owns. A Kala Sarpa Yoga along. the six/ twelve axis (i.e. when one node is in the sixth house and the other in the twelfth) or the two/eight axis (the nodes in the second and eighth houses) may spell jail for its owner.
Bhanga: Most Jyotishis, even in India, do not know all the many permutations which cancel or break (bhanga) the Raja Yogas — beneficial yogas found in many horoscopes. These bhangas cause poverty, dependence and servitude, or reduce kings to beggary. Many jyotish texts include a chapter on this subject following their more extensive chapters on the many graha yogas and how they are formed. Two chapters which stand out are Saravali’s Chapter 39 and Jataka Chapter 6. Parashara, in his Brihat Parashara Hora, Chapter 41, ‘Combinations for Wealth’, with a Chapter 42 ‘Combinations for Destitution’, a juxtaposition of chapter suggests that the author intended that beneficial graha yoga be taught along with their cancellations, which is almost never taught nowadays. There seem to be no general rules from which the breakers spring; we mention, as examples, just two of which are recognized:
(i) If any two of Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are debilitate one of these debilitated planets is simultaneously in the lagna while the Moon is in Scorpio, all Raja Yogas in the horoscope will become futile (from Saravali 39:2).
(z) Whoever is born in the hora (planetary hour) of Mars at a time when Saturn occupies a kendra in the horoscope and is unaspected by any benefic becomes a slave and a beggar (Parvata 6:4).
These two examples employ criteria which should by familiar. Many of the bhanga combinations employ more unusual techniques, including the examination of birth omens: ‘If a meteor, whirlwind, tornado, hurricane, storm, earthquake, comet or any other portentous event is present at the time of birth, all good Raja Yogas stand nullified’ (Saravali 39: I ‘)- Jyotishis who were not present at the births of their clients to observe omens can often make up for that deficiency by observing the omens at the time of reading a horoscope – but that is another story entirely.
DASHAS AND GOCHAR
Change is all that is permanent in our world. Although people believe that whatever is indicated in a horoscope will begin at birth and continue in force until death, experience shown there is ‘a time to every purpose under heaven’. In those horoscopes that indicate a wonderful career with good earnings and great accomplishments, one may find his niche early in life, while the other must first navigate professional waters before finally achieving prosperity. Mother Theresa found her mission in life only after several years of obscurity at a school for the children of wealthy Calcutta families.
Jyotish evaluates both permanence and change in life. This evaluation assesses the potentials inherent in a horoscope, assessment estimates when these potentials will develop interpretation can tell us whether or not a horoscope a successful marriage; a dynamic interpretation can predict the age that promised marriage is likely to begin. In Jyotish evaluations derive from analysis of houses, their lords significators, while dynamic assessments are made from Gocharas.
DASHAS
The word dasha means ‘stage or condition of life’ or ‘hot Both these meanings apply to jyotish, where dasha indicates the conditions one will experience in life and the choices and boundaries of these stages; Jyotishis and their clients in much emphasis on these Dashas, often eagerly anticipating
Maraka (Sanskrit: मारक) in Hindu astrology refers to the planet or planets that cause death at the end of a particular life-span; if the assessed life-span is not over they cause accident, ill-health, poverty and misery during the course of their Dasha or antra-Dasha or in the period of the planet associating/influenced by them. Each lagna has a fixed Maraka or Marakas. The two luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, and the lord of the 9th house generally do not become Marakas. The lords of the 2nd and the 7th house, or the malefic planets occupying any one of these named houses and associated with their lords are the Primary determinants of death. The Secondary determinants of death are the benefic planets in association with lords of 2nd and 7th house or the lords of the 3rd and 8th house, or the lord of the 3rd or the 8th associating with the lord of the 2nd or the 7th house. The Tertiary determinants of death are Saturn associating with any of the afore stated Marakas, the lord of the 6th or the 8th associated with a Maraka, and the least powerful planet in the horoscope. The transit influences of the Sun, Mars and Jupiter are taken into account for determining the time of death.
Principles for Qualifying Yogas
Finding Yogas in a person’s chart is an essential part of Vedic horoscopic analysis. Positive Yogas show where a person has their greatest gifts and achievements, while negative Yogas indicate the areas of most challenge. A simple rule: Where will the blessings of a positive yoga occur? For the house themes of the house where the yoga-forming planets reside.
For example, if a person has a powerful yoga in the 4th house, they may own wonderful homes, or drive great cars, or come from a revered lineage, or have a deep understanding of psychology, or have an amazing mother, or any other 4th house theme might be enhanced, depending upon the nature of the planets involved.
Yogas vary in their impact upon a person’s life. It is important to determine how effectively each yoga is going to operate by Qualifying the Yogas.
After finding Yogas in a person’s chart, we need to assess to what degree each yoga will manifest by examining additional conditions. There are many different factors to evaluate. In most cases, what makes a good yoga more fortuitous is the opposite of what makes a bad yoga more difficult. E.g. if a good yoga is formed by strong planets, it becomes more auspicious; while if a bad yoga is formed by weak planets, it becomes more harmful.
- Relationship of Yoga-Forming Planets to the Specific Ascendant of the Chart
Vedic astrologers understand that planets perform differently for each Ascendant. In fact, this is the basis of the concept of functional or temporal benefics and malefics. E.g. Jupiter does not function well for Libra and Taurus (Venus) Ascendants because of the houses it rules for each Lagna. For Taurus rising, Jupiter rules the 8th and 11th houses; for Libra rising, Jupiter rules the 3rd and 6th houses. Positive Yogas formed by Jupiter for these Ascendants have less potency. This illustrates how important the Ascendant’s influence is upon the effectiveness of Yogas. The following table shows the most productive and least productive planets for each Ascendant.
Best and Worst Planets for Each Ascendant (Yogakarakas are shown in bold.)
Ascendant | Best House Rulerships | Worst House Rulerships |

John Belushi’s Chart
In John Belushi’s chart, his powerful Dhana yoga, formed by Jupiter as lord of the 1st and Venus as lord of the 11th, is weakened by Venus’ unhappy Rulership of the 6th house, and by the planetary war between them.
Dhana Yoga
There is a relationship between the Lagna lord on the one hand and the 2nd, or 5th, or 9th or 11th lord on the other hand.
The person will be wealthy.
His Venus not only kept the yoga from giving him as much wealth as it would have, but indicated (as the 6th lord) his insecurities, health issues, and eventually fatal drug addiction.
His Moon, debilitated, dark, waning, and in a Dusthana as ruler of the 8th, also contributed to his addiction patterns and emotional angst.
A planet having challenging Rulerships for a specific Ascendant noticeably weakens its ability to uplift a life through the positive Yogas it forms (and magnifies the challenges in a person’s life through the negative Yogas it forms). It does not, however, nullify a positive yoga completely; and one must always take all of the relevant factors into account.
- The Strength of Yoga-Forming Planets
Many Yogas, by definition, require at least one of the yoga-forming planets to be in its own sign or exalted. Nevertheless, for any positive yoga to have a notably uplifting effect upon a person’s life, at least one of the yoga-forming planets should be strong. If none of the yoga-forming planets is strong, then the yoga may still be beneficial to a lesser degree.
Planets gain strength by being in their own sign, or exalted (or even in own Nakshatra), by direction (dig Bala), by brightness (Bright Moon or retrograde planet), in the same sign as in the Navamsha (Vargottama), or in Parivartana Yoga (mutual exchange, I.e. in each other’s signs) with another planet. The more types of strength a yoga-forming planet has, the more powerful the yoga.
For a negative yoga to be seriously problematic in a person’s life, the yoga-forming planets should be weak. Weakness can be by sign (the sign of debilitation), by dimness (combustion or Dark Moon), or by proximity to another planet (planetary war).
In Marilyn Monroe’s chart, one of the major reasons why the Sasha Yoga formed by Saturn is powerful is because Saturn is doubly strong (retrograde and exalted).
Marilyn Monroe’s Chart

It brought her, along with many other things, very powerful life partners (since, as lord of the 7th, Saturn represents her spouses). These men definitely added to her fame and fortune.
- Yogas Reproduced from Chandra or Surya Lagnas
For most of the Yogas commonly found in charts, such as the Maha Purusha Yogas (where a true planet — Mercury through Saturn — is in an angle and either in its own sign or exalted), the presence of the same yoga in the Chandra Lagna or Surya Lagna chart gives it significantly greater influence.
In the chart of Marilyn Monroe, above, Saturn is also in an angle from the Moon; therefore her Sasha yoga is even more significant.
- Aspects to Yoga-Forming Planets
When planets forming a positive yoga receive no aspects or only aspects from benefics, then the yoga is much better able to function. The aspect of even one malefic can significantly impair the expression of a positive yoga.
When planets forming a negative yoga are aspected by one or more malefics, the yoga becomes more arduous. If a strong benefic aspects a planet participating in a challenging yoga, significant amelioration of that yoga will occur.
In Arnold Schwarzenegger’s chart, his Bhadra yoga has only the aspects of Jupiter and the Bright (and waxing) Moon and no malefic aspects; and it repeats from the Chandra Lagna.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Chart
His Mercury, in other words, is completely well-supported in his chart, and has brought him great success and prosperity.
- Placement by House
While many Yogas, by definition, must occur in Kendras (angular houses), others do not. When positive Yogas occur in houses 6, 8, or 12 (the Dusthanas) or in Dada Rashis, they still can deliver benefits, but often not as easily nor as prominently as Yogas occurring in positive houses. When negative Yogas occur in Dusthanas, their challenging effects are amplified.
Again, in Arnold’s chart, above, Mercury is in the best house it could be in, because the Lagna (First House) is a very positive house, and because Mercury rules the Lagna, and because it gets directional strength (dig Bala) in the First House. All of these further contributed to his phenomenal rise in life.
- The Connection of Yogas to the Lagna
Since the Lagna (First House) and its lord represent the person, for an individual to be able to fully utilize the gifts represented by a yoga, the yoga-forming planets need to have a relationship with either the First House or the Lord of the First House (or both). Yogas without any connection to the First House or its Lord are more difficult for the person to access, and therefore less likely to transform a person’s life.
In Arnold Schwarzenegger’s chart, Mercury is both in and lord of the First House.
- The Strength of the Lagna
Not only does the strength of the ruler of the Ascendant (and the First House itself) determine a person’s vitality, likeability, popularity, common sense, and ability to bounce back from life’s travails, but also the degree to which a yoga can fully manifest.
If the First House is occupied by malefics (not in their own sign or exalted) or aspected by malefics, and not occupied or aspected by benefics, while the ruler of the Ascendant is similarly only connected to malefics and is weak, then these weaknesses can very well prevent Yogas in the chart from fully expressing themselves.
Conversely, if the First House and the ruler of the First House are only influenced by benefics, and the ruler of the First House is strong, even weaker Yogas will find easy expression.
For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Ascendant and Ascendant lord Mercury meet the conditions for a strong Ascendant very well, and he has been popular, resilient, and greatly successful.
- Reinforced Yogas.
When a yoga-forming planet participates in more than one yoga, the Yogas augment each other. In other words, there is a synergistic effect.
In Arnold’s chart, Mercury forms two Bhadra Maha Purusha Yogas (in its own sign in a Kendra from both Lagna and Moon), a Dhana Yoga with the Moon (Lords of the First and Second in mutual aspect), a Shubha Vasi yoga (Mercury in the house before the Sun), and a Chamara Yoga (First House and Lord only influenced by benefics). Therefore, Mercury is an incredibly powerful yoga-forming planet and will bring great blessings to Arnold even during its Bhuktis.
A much subtler but noteworthy example of reinforced Yogas exists in Marilyn Monroe’s chart. The association of Mars and Jupiter in her chart doesn’t, at first glance, look very promising. Neither has strength, they are in the 8th house, and neither has any relationship with the Lagna or Lagnesa. While neither planet receives any aspects from malefics, and both are friends of the Lord of the First (the Moon), these factors are not enough to explain her huge celebrity.
However, Mars and Jupiter together create two of the most important Raja Yogas. Mars and Jupiter are Lords of the Ninth and the Tenth, and Lords of the Fifth and the Ninth. The combined effect of two such incredibly important Raja Yogas more than compensates for the lack of other distinguishing factors.
- Running the Relevant Dashas and Bhuktis
A yoga will only reach full fruition when a person runs the Dasha of one or more of the yoga-forming planets. From then one (I.e. for the rest of the person’s life) the yoga will be active.

Marilyn Monroe achieved great fame during her Jupiter Dasha, when the above-mentioned Yogas became activated.
Even if one doesn’t run the Dasha of a positive yoga-forming planet during one’s lifetime, the Bhuktis of that planet can also give very good results.
- The Influence of Orbs
While Vedic astrologers see planets as aspecting whole houses and every planet in them, they do, just like Western astrologers, do pay attention to orb, and know that planets with tighter aspects (smaller orbs) are more potent. Therefore, in the formation of Yogas, the stronger the connection — by orb — between the yoga-forming planets, the stronger the yoga.

In John Belushi’s chart, above, his Jupiter and Venus are very close, which strengthened his Dhana yoga.
Two situations where closeness of connection weakens the yoga are when a yoga-forming planet is combust (within 6o of the Sun) and when the planet forms a planetary war (two true planets within 1o of each other).
The serious evaluation of Yogas must take into account these considerations. Otherwise, Jyotishis will over-emphasize Yogas that cannot deliver their full promise, or pay too little attention to Yogas that may significantly affect a person’s life. Being able to distinguish which Yogas are the most important adds life and depth to each chart reading

Checklist for Qualifying Yogas
In order to use the principles in this article easily, I decided to create the following checklist for assessing positive Yogas.
Major considerations:
Major considerations:
1. Are any of the yoga-forming planets strong? If not, then the yoga is not likely to give rise to much success unless the yoga-forming planets are participating in more than one yoga. So the corollary question is: Are the yoga-forming planets creating more than one yoga?2. Does the yoga recur (involving the same planets) from the Chandra or Surya Lagnas? If so, then the yoga is more powerful.
3. Do the yoga-forming planets receive aspects from malefics? If so, the magnitude of the yoga’s effects will be notably diminished, and additional issues might arise.
4. Do the yoga-forming planets have any relationship with the First House or the ruler of the First House? If not, the abilities and gifts represented by the yoga will be hard to access.
5. Are the Ascendant and lord of the Ascendant predominately strong or weak? If both are strong and influenced by benefics, then the yoga will be easily expressed, if both are weak and influenced by malefics, then not.
6. Is the person running or going to run the Dasha of one of the yoga-forming planets? If so, then the yoga is likely to reach full fruition. If not, then has the person already run the Dasha of one of the yoga-forming planets? If not, then the yoga may not reach full fruition.
7. For the person’s specific Ascendant, do either or both of the yoga-forming planets have good house Rulerships? If not, then the yoga’s effect will be significantly diminished.
Minor Considerations:
- Does the yoga take place in houses 6, 8, or 12? If so, then the themes of that house will be enhanced (e.g. medical skill for the 6th, or occult gifts for the 8th), but the yoga may not give as notable results in conventional ways.
- Are the yoga-forming planets close to each other by orb? If so, then the yoga may be a bit more powerful.
